Open your gallery in mobile sketchbook and press the + to select Scan Sketch. This is where the white background comes in handy. Try holding the ink at different heights to get different effects, and try different motions of your hand as the ink falls. The type of medium can make the overall shape change for the splat. As an example, the ink soaks into watercolor paper, but not on acrylic. Using the Copic ink, drip the ink on different materials for different splats. We’re going to start off by making ink splats on white paper. Scan Sketch is available on all versions of the mobile SketchBook app. If you’re not sure what Scan Sketch even is, here’s a short video to show you how handy it can be - especially when it comes to line art. You’ll need both a mobile version (to capture images with your smartphone) and a desktop version of SketchBook (to create custom brushes).

This full-feature version of SketchBook is free for everyone. To set the amount of sharpening, choose Paint Edit > Layer Effect > Sharpen Layer to open the Sharpen Layer Options box and adjust the Sharpness from 0 (no sharpening) to 10 (maximum sharpening). Choose Paint Edit > Layer Effect > Sharpen Layer. Select the image layer you want to sharpen. This will open a select box where you can choose Background Blur. … With the shape selected, look on the right and click on the Gaussian Blur text label. Once the image is on the canvas, select it. Sketch makes it pretty easy to add a Gaussian Blur. In either the Brush Palette or Brush Properties, double-tap the brush you want to modify. Use the Edge slider to make the edges of your brush softer or sharper.

If you’re on Mac or Windows, you will have access to all brushes and can even load custom ones from places like the blog. There is also a brush type that will turn any brush into a natural blender. SketchBook Pro comes with an assortment of brushes for blending and smudging.
